We spend hours and hours every year shaving, waxing and plucking, not to mention an ongoing cost we could all do without. These may seem like the only options available to you if you want smooth, hairless skin. However, there is a solution that means you’ll be virtually hair-free for the rest of your life!
Here are some of the things you need to know about laser hair removal if it’s a treatment you’re considering:
It’s a simple procedure
It can sound complicated but laser hair removal is actually very simple and straightforward! The word laser may sound intimidating but it’s actually just targeting the hair follicle preventing it from growing again. Once the follicle is destroyed it’s gone for good.
It works best on four particular areas
Although laser hair removal works on all areas of the body, it’s most effective on the bikini line, lip, chin and underarm.
The thicker the hair, the better!
If you have dark hair you’ll know how stubborn it can be, but the laser is attracted to the pigment, or colour, in the follicle making it a very effective treatment for those with darker hair.
Don’t mix with medication
Laser hair removal can be unsuitable when you are on certain medication, so it’s essential that you let us know at Synergy if you are on medication. Certain antibiotics can be photosensitive so it could be an idea to wait until you have finished the course. In addition, it’s best to stop using skincare containing retinoids and alfa hydroxyl acids.
You’ll need a course of treatments
Everyone is different so the number of treatments required will differ, but on average most patients need around 6 to 8. Laser hair removal works better when the hair is actively growing, and different parts of the body grow at different rates.
You need to complete a course
Don’t miss a session, because it’s essential that you complete the amount needed for the best results.
It doesn’t hurt
Most patients liken it to a scratch or rubber band snapping on the skin. It’s certainly less painful than waxing each month!
Menstruation won’t matter
If you are on your period, there’s no need to cancel a treatment. It’s important to attend each treatment regardless of your menstrual cycle.
Shave before each appointment
It’s important to shave the treatment area a day before the treatment. This is so that the laser can penetrate the internal root rather than the external hair. Don’t wax, tweeze or bleach any hair a month before the treatment because the root needs to stay intact in order for the laser to destroy the follicle.
Apply SPF after your treatment
It’s advisable that you avoid sun exposure after a session, and we don’t recommend having a treatment before or after going on holiday to a hot country. We can advise on the appropriate sun care protection.
It’s better to buy a course
We discount a course of treatments to make it more cost effective and to encourage patients to attend a course, giving much better results.
It’s low risk
Laser hair removal is a safe treatment, but there are some very rare side effects, which we will talk you through before you start your treatment. We usually start on a low setting to make sure you’re comfortable and build up from there.
